View 14,000 years of history in one exhibit

Visitors to North Carolina who are looking for the history of the state can find it all in one place and in only one place. The North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh offers a 20,000-square-foot exhibit that is the only permanent exhibit in North Carolina that traces the history of the entire state, from its earliest inhabitants to the present. Called the Story of North Carolina, the exhibit includes two full-size historic houses, hands-on interactive experiences and artifacts from across the state including 12,000-year-old tools, one of Blackbeard’s cannons and a full-size replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer that the Wright brothers used for their historic first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight. The exhibit encourages visitors to see, hear and experience the state’s history. Additional monthly programs at the museum include children’s programs, craft demonstrations and family events. The North Carolina Museum of History is part of the Division of State History Museums and is free to the public.
